How to get rid of split ends

How many times have we heard of split ends in the hair! This problem mainly affects women because it appears especially when the hair are long. But what exactly are split ends? How can split ends be treated or removed? Do we necessarily need a cut? Let’s see together!

What are split ends

Split ends are a widespread hair blemish. A close look at the end of the hair shows a bifurcation. The hair shaft splits in two, giving rise to a messy, brittle effect on the lengths. From a physiological point of view, the hair is internally damaged. The scientific name for split ends is trichoptilosis, i.e. the longitudinal fracture of the hair starting at the tip which literally splits. How do split ends occur and how can they be prevented?

Split ends: what are the causes?

Hair with split ends are brittle, weakened and dry. The causes can be thermal or chemical. The former refers to incorrect use of hair dryers and straighteners, the latter to the wrong products, bleaching or overly aggressive treatments.

Therefore, subjecting the hair to frequent sessions with straighteners, hairdryers and curling irons does not help the health of the hair. Frequent brushing also subjects hair to mechanical stress. Beware also of chemical treatments: bleaching and dyeing if carried out too frequently can weaken the hair, making it more fragile. It is also good to remember to always protect your hair from the sun, chlorine and saltiness and to use suitable products. Finally, diet is important: an unbalanced diet also has a negative effect on the health of your hair!

The products and remedies for split ends

As we have seen, split ends are one of the beauty problems that especially afflict longer hairs and when the hair is brittle. It is therefore necessary to take care of the hair’s health from the inside. What are the best remedies and products for split ends?

It is essential to moisturize the hair in depth by choosing the right products. Even the choice of shampoo should not be underestimated: it is better to prefer shampoos that are gentle and suitable for the hair type. Always include a moisturizing mask or masks for damaged hair in your beauty routine. This certainly helps to strengthen the hair structure and prevent split ends.

The final solution, if treatments do not work, is definitely a haircut. In order to prevent a more drastic cut later, it is best to opt for a trim, even when the hair is particularly stressed.
